Being a Woman Feels Heavy This Week
Something is happening among women. The Cornell 7 didn't create it. But they may have struck a match dangerously close to something that's been simmering for a very long time.
The Cornell 7 has become one flashpoint. Jane Doe, a former Cornell University student, says seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity drugged and gang raped her in October 2024. Her civil lawsuit describes her becoming incapacitated while sexual acts continued and includes an image of a fraternity Snapchat group chat from that night. Cornell's own disciplinary process later resulted in suspensions and expulsions, essays, and the fraternity chapter was closed. This week, the Tompkins County district attorney reopened the criminal investigation and announced that the case would be presented to a grand jury. Jane Doe's attorney says the original investigation failed to adequately pursue her account and available evidence; the district attorney disputes that characterization, and attorneys for some of the men named have denied wrongdoing.

NYFW’s Deliberate Pause
On September 11, 2001, at 8:46 a.m., the world stopped. Twenty-five years later, New York Fashion Week will wait. For those who remember, and those who never knew why, this is the story the empty space is holding.
At 9 a.m. on Friday, New York Fashion Week will be quiet. Clothes will be waiting backstage. Editors will be checking their phones, models will be sitting in hair and makeup chairs, and cars will already be moving through Manhattan, but no show will begin on the official schedule.
The absence is deliberate.
